Name: Álvaro García
Age: 25 years
High School: Buceo School of Computer Science
Major: Bachelor's Degree in Information Systems
Year of graduation: 2009
Employment history: Director of Evolutiva
In 2004, he began studying Bachelor's Degree in Information Systems at Universidad ORT Uruguay. In 2006, he began working at the university as a laboratory assistant. In 2007, he founded the company Evolutiva.
“At my parents’ suggestion, I visited Universidad ORT Uruguay in Universidad ORT Uruguay, learned more about it, and found the program very interesting.”
At that time, Álvaro felt that the university offered “a very welcoming environment where I could grow as a professional.” That is why, in 2004, he began pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science.
Ever since he was a teenager, Álvaro had been interested in computer science, which is why he completed the Technology-Based High School Program in Computer Science.
“In college, I had to choose between a Bachelor’s degree and a degree in Systems Engineering; I chose the former because it focuses a bit more on business administration, which caught my interest.”
For Álvaro, studying at the university turned out to be an “excellent experience.” “The university’s infrastructure is constantly improving: new classrooms, study spaces, and has necessary equipment and labs.” He also believes that his department has a highly qualified faculty.
Over the years of study, he formed very strong bonds with several classmates. “We see each other at least once a month,” he said.
In 2006, he had his first job as a Laboratory Assistant at the university. “Basically, I handled lab maintenance, updated the tools, helped students with their lab requirements, and occasionally substituted for the Programming lab sessions.”
Álvaro believes that working at the university helped him continue his studies while gaining work experience.
“After that, I decided to start my own company, and I received tremendous support—including access to professional networks—from the university as well as from the university’s Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIE).”
His company, Evolutiva, founded in mid-2007, is dedicated to developing technological solutions; has in Uruguay, Chile, Argentina, and Panama.
Álvaro recalls that one of his company’s ventures was one of the first projects supported by the CIE. It was PedidosYa!, presented in March 2008 as a final-year project and later incorporated as one of his company’s services.
He works alongside two partners: Systems Engineer Ariel Burschtin and Information Technology Analyst Ruben Sosenke, both graduates of the Faculty of Engineering at Universidad ORT Uruguay.
Álvaro states that “thanks to the education I received at the university, potential obstacles become challenges to be continuously overcome.”
