Graduation ceremonies

Speech by Macarena del Campo, Esq.

Remarks by a graduate of the Bachelor’s program in International Studies during the first annual commencement ceremony in June 2008.

Good morning.

It is an honor for me to address you on behalf of my fellow graduates from the School of Business and Social Sciences.

First of all, let me congratulate all the graduates. After several years, we have finally reached the moment we’ve been looking forward to since that first day of college—a moment that, without a doubt, makes all the efforts we’ve put in over the past few years of college worthwhile.

Today we find ourselves at a turning point, where we are transitioning from students to professionals. In this particular situation, it seems worthwhile to examine the competitive advantages our university has given us—advantages that will provide us with more opportunities and open more doors for us.

These opportunities are based on factors such as the knowledge that is shared and acquired, but not exclusively on those factors.

It is not only the "what"—that is, the content—that matters, but also the "how": this refers to the research methodology.

Although the methodology often seemed tedious and irrelevant to us at the time, looking back, we now understand its practical value and the added value it brings to our professional practice. It encompasses the numerous required assignments, the constant emphasis on teamwork, and strict adherence to schedules and deadlines.

The exceptional faculty also deserves special mention. The professors and coordinators stand out not only for their expertise but also for the relationships they build with students and the support they provide on matters that go beyond the subject matter that brought us together.

Finally, this openness I am referring to is also rooted in ORT University’s international reputation and network of relationships. It is recognized as one of the top 500 universities in the world and is the only Uruguayan institution included in the Times Higher Education Supplement’s World University Rankings.

These many doors that are now opening will be of particular help to us as we embark on our professional journey.

However, how we make the most of them and which paths we choose will depend largely on us and our circumstances.

Because only each of us knows just how much this title means and represents. And it’s up to each of us to make the most of the opportunities that come our way from now on.

My heartfelt congratulations to the graduates.

We extend our sincere gratitude to the authorities.

And to everyone who has joined us, we extend our heartfelt thanks.

Thank you very much.
