Lecture: "Everything You Need to Know About Flu Outbreaks and Epidemics"

July 8, 2009
On July 15, ORT Pocitos hosted a lecture titled "Everything You Need to Know About Flu Outbreaks and Epidemics," presented by Dr. William Paolillo. The event was organized by the Department of Jewish Studies and the Uruguayan Friends of Magen David Adom.

Dr. Paolillo is the director and founder of the Claro de Luna nursing home. He previously served as director of the Ciudad de la Costa Health Center and as coordinator of outpatient care at the Ciudad de la Costa polyclinics. He remains actively involved in the community as a member of several social organizations.

During his presentation, Dr. Paolillo argued that there are two major epidemics: the flu and fear, which is caused by a “lack of information.” He clarified that, in any case, the pandemic must be given the attention it deserves.

He noted that the clinical presentation of the H1N1 flu is similar to that of any other flu but stated that this strain is more “aggressive and rapid” when it comes to “attacking” humans.

The contagious period of the disease begins one day before symptoms appear and continues up to seven days after they disappear. According to the doctor, this new virus is “easily inactivated” by detergents and disinfectants.

Paolillo explained that the pandemic is currently in its “Phase 6” (spread worldwide), although later (it is not yet known when) it will move to the phase known as the “Post-Pandemic Period,” in which only remnants will remain, and finally, the “Post-Pandemic Period” will arrive, which is equivalent to the final recovery.

The prevention and treatment of various conditions are aligned with the principles of Magen David Adom – Israel (Israeli Red Cross) for the protection of the entire population.
