October 1, 2009
The project submitted by Architect Alejandro Baptista Pereyra, Professor of Architectural Design at the School of Architecture, together with Architect Alejandro Baptista Acerenza and Architect Horacio Flora, Full Professors of Design at the Faculty, won the competition organized by the Banco de la República (BROU) for the expansion of its headquarters, among 67 participating teams. The complex will cover approximately 30,000 square meters. On Monday, October 5, at the School of Architecture, the three authors of the project gave a presentation on the topic titled “Conference on the Winning Project of the Public Competition for Architectural Preliminary Designs for the Banco de la República Oriental del Uruguay.”

The bank acquired the block containing the Atarazana (a colonial military shipyard) and the Old Customs House (now in ruins), located between Piedras, Zabala, 25 de Agosto Boulevard, and Solís streets, to build its VIP offices there, which will be connected to the main headquarters via a bridge. The renovation will be integrated into the construction of two office buildings. A third building will preserve the historic heritage and house a cultural center, an auditorium, and an exhibition hall.

Sebastián Baptista, Agustín Dupuy, Marcos Guiponi, Gabriela Gallaretto, Ma. Fernanda Laguarda, Líber Marichal, Gastón Navarro, and Claudia Tanoni collaborated on the project.
