Conference on "LEED Certification for Buildings"

September 1, 2011
On Monday, September 26, 2011, the lecture "LEED Certification of Buildings" was held in the Hemicycle Hall at ORT Pocitos, presented by architect Guillermo Alonzo, a Colombian specialist in sustainable architecture.  The conference, organized by the School of Architecture, was aimed at students, faculty, architects, engineers, and professionals involved in the construction industry.

Building certification through various standards and systems has become essential to mitigate the environmental impact of construction, and a new standard practice in the execution of architectural projects that take environmental conditions into account. This process of raising awareness among the professional community, institutions, and governments has already begun in several Latin American countries, such as Colombia and Venezuela, where in some cases certification is already required for certain types of buildings. In this conference, Architect Alonzo presented the LEED certification system, which is one of the systems applicable for building certification.

Alonzo specializes in green building and is certified by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). He currently works in Bogotá, Colombia, as a consultant on sustainable projects. He teaches on this subject at the Javeriana University and the University of the Andes in Colombia. He is a lecturer for the Andean Development Corporation.
