Lecture: “Art with Objects: The Creative World of Janoj Piven”

On May 8, 2012, ORT Centro hosted the lecture “Art with Objects: The Creative World of Janoj Piven,” presented by illustrator and cartoonist Janoj Piven, a contributor to the Israeli newspaper Haaretz. He has published his illustrations in major American magazines and newspapers such as Time, Newsweek, and Rolling Stone, as well as in European publications such as The Times of London and Die Weltwoche of Switzerland. He presented his creative technique, which has been adopted by educators, therapists, and counselors as a tool for expressing psychological issues through play and creativity. The event was organized by the Israeli Embassy in Uruguay, the Zionist Organization of Uruguay, the Jewish Community of Uruguay, and the university’s Department of Jewish Studies. It was declared of ministerial interest by the Ministry of Education and Culture.
Piven was born in Uruguay and currently lives in Israel. He studied illustration at the School of Visual Arts in New York. His work is part of the permanent collection of the Prints and Photographs Division of the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. He conducts workshops and lectures at art schools worldwide, including the China Academy of Art (Beijing), the Art and Design Center (Pasadena), Sheridan College (Toronto), and the European Institute of Design ( Rome). He received the Gold Medal from the Society of Illustrators of New York for his caricature of Barbra Streisand and the Silver Medal from The Society of Publication Designers, among other awards. His book "What Presidents Are Made Of" was named by Time Magazine as one of the ten best children’s books published in 2004.
