Smartway: a graduate-led startup that emerged from two final projects in the Electronics Engineering program

August 15, 2012
Smartway was founded in 2010 based on two final projects completed by electronics engineering students. Nicolás Cremona and Gonzalo Díaz began their thesis in March 2009 on the development of a vehicle diagnostic scanner using OBDII diagnostic protocols. Meanwhile, Damián Sandler, José García, and Gonzalo Petersen developed, as their thesis project at the same time, a remote monitoring system that collected data from the diagnostic scanner created by the Cremona-Díaz team and sent it to a server, enabling web-based visualization of the data.

The engineers successfully completed both projects, graduating with excellent grades, and realized that the two ideas complemented each other.

From then on, they continued working together on the same project to launch Smartway. They approached the university’s Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship to develop a business plan and begin setting up the company.

They received support from the National Agency for Innovation and Research and were awarded funding to develop their project. Today, they continue to grow as a company within the Ingenio incubator.

In a few days, Smartway will launch a vehicle control and diagnostic system.
