Presentation of the “Los Gansos” Project

On November 19, 2012, the presentation “Los Gansos” was held at ORT Pocitos, led by Sergeant Gary García, Head of the Cerro Largo Municipal Police. The presenter introduced this graduation project, carried out in collaboration with Deputy Commissioner Ricardo Morales of the Cerro Largo Departmental Police, as part of the “Municipal Public Safety Programs” course at the MASHAV Institute in Beit Berl, Kfar Sava (Israel). The project, which has been successfully implemented in the department of Cerro Largo since March 2012, aims to reduce school dropout rates in the department and eradicate child abuse, child labor, domestic violence, and begging, among other social ills affecting the department’s society.  It is based on the involvement of public and private organizations, with the children themselves serving as the project’s lead implementers. The event was organized in collaboration with the Uruguayan Association of Former Israel Scholars and the Department of Jewish Studies.
Gary García is the Chief of the Cerro Largo Municipal Police. He holds a degree in Labor Relations from the University of the Republic, along with postgraduate degrees in Worker Cooperatives, Child Abuse and Neglect, Social Communication and Negotiation, Occupational Health, Workplace Accident Prevention, and Human Resources Management. Between February and March 2012, he completed the course “Municipal Public Safety Programs” at the MASHAV Institute in Israel, with a scholarship from the State of Israel.
