Sixth edition of the "International Animation Festival"

The School of Communication and Design organized the sixth edition of the International Animation Festival “FIA ’12,” which took place from October 22 to 25, 2012, in the school’s auditorium. The FIA serves as a platform for showcasing animations created by students and graduates of animation schools, independent animators, and international production companies, as well as a space for artistic and technological reflection on the discipline of animation. The categories include animated short film, experimental animated short film, web animation, animation school reels, and advertising short film/music video. On this occasion, 55 short films were selected, totaling four hours of animations in competition. Animations from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, El Salvador, Spain, the United States, Finland, Italy, Mexico, Singapore, and Uruguay participated in the festival.  

This year's edition also featured three special screenings: "ASIFA Egypt" – International Animated Film Association, "Animamundi Brazil" – Brazil International Animation Festival, and "Producer Show" – a reel of student work from CalArts (California Institute of the Arts).

Since its first edition in 2007, submissions have been received from Argentina, Australia, Bolivia, Brazil, Bulgaria, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, El Salvador, Spain, the United States, Finland, the Netherlands, Iceland, Italy, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Poland, Singapore, Venezuela, and Uruguay.

As part of the festival, Robert Lence and Jorgen Klubien, faculty members at CalArts and visiting professors in the Bachelor’s Program in Animation and Video Games, delivered the lectures “Behind Toy Story” and “The Character Behind the Character in ‘The Nightmare Before Christmas’” respectively (visit funded by the National Agency for Research and Innovation (ANII)). Alejandro Erramún, Academic Coordinator of Animation and Video Games at the school, and Victoria Barreiro, a faculty member in the Bachelor’s Degree in Animation and Video Games, discussed their recent academic training and pedagogical exchange at CalArts and their visits to major animation studios worldwide during their talk “Two Professors in Hollywood.” For his part, Miguel Castro, Territory Manager at Nexsys Uruguay, delivered the lecture“Adobe Dynamic Link: A New Approach to Video Production,” in which he presented Adobe’s latest advancements in video production and demonstrated Wacom graphics tablets.
