Symposium: “Religious Freedom in the 21st Century: Challenges and Opportunities”

On April 25, 2013, the symposium “Religious Freedom in the 21st Century. Challenges and Challenges” took place at ORT Pocitos, led by Dr. Juan Raúl Ferreira Sienra, member of the Board of Directors of the National Human Rights Institution and Ombudsman’s Office of the Uruguayan Parliament; Dr. Carmen Asiaín Pereira, Professor of the Master’s Program in Law at the University of Montevideo and the Faculty of Theology of Uruguay; Monsignor Mariano Soler, and Mr. Rafael Winter, professor in the Jewish Studies Department at the Escuela Integral Hebreo Uruguaya-Instituto Ariel Hebreo Uruguayo and vice president of the Montevideo Holocaust Memorial Center. The event was organized by the Jewish-Christian Fellowship of Uruguay.

Ferreira Sienra holds a Ph.D. in Economics from La Salle University (United States). He served as a National Representative and Senator of the Republic. He chaired the Uruguayan Association Against Racism and Apartheid, the Uruguayan Commission for Soviet Jews, and the Uruguayan Commission Against Racism and Ethnic Persecution. He worked as a journalist for media outlets in Latin America, Europe, and the United States. He has published more than 12 books, including: “El desafío externo” (1986) and “Vadearás la sangre” (2006). He was awarded the Order of San Martín the Liberator with the rank of Grand Cross. He received the Order of Vasco Núñez de Balboa in Panama and the Jerusalem Prize from the Zionist Organization of Uruguay.

Asiaín Pereira is pursuing a Ph.D. in State Ecclesiastical Law at the Complutense University of Madrid. She holds a Ph.D. in Law and Social Sciences from the University of the Republic (Udelar). She is an Adjunct Professor of Constitutional Law at the Law School of the University of Montevideo and a Member of the Board of Directors of the Latin American Consortium for Religious Freedom. She is a Founding Member of the Institute of State Religious Law, Uruguay, and a Member of the International Consortium for Studies in Law and Religion. She is a Member of the International Advisory Board of the General Journal of Canon Law and State Ecclesiastical Law.

Prof. Winter holds a master’s degree in Contemporary Judaism from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and specialized in Jewish Education for the Diaspora at the Melton Center of the same university. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Historical Sciences from the Faculty of Humanities and Sciences at the University of the Republic. He is a member of the Press and Outreach Commission of the Central Israeli Committee of Uruguay. He is a member of the Jewish-Christian Fellowship of Uruguay and a frequent columnist for the Semanario Hebreo and the Mensuario Identidad. He served as Coordinator and Instructor of the Jewish Studies Department at the Ariel Hebrew Institute of Uruguay.
