Book Launch: “Isaac Borojovich and Uruguay’s Memory of the Shoah”

October 10, 2013
On October 10, 2013, the book launch for “Isaac Borojovich and the Uruguayan Memory of the Shoah,” written by Dr. David Serrano Blanquer, took place at ORT Pocitos. Also participating in the presentation were Dr. Miguel Cherro, author of the book “Giza, the Girl with the Suitcase” (Montevideo, 2009), Pablo Harari, Director of Ediciones Trilce Uruguay, and David Telias, Coordinator of the Department of Jewish Studies. The book, published in Montevideo by Ediciones Trilce, recounts the memoirs of Isaac Borojovich, a survivor of the Shoah—the Jewish Holocaust.

“When I met Isaac, I was struck by his account as a Holocaust survivor—by the way he told it, with humanity yet at the same time with a piercing harshness—and by his final message about life and love. Partly in Montevideo and partly in Barcelona, we managed to bring forth the memories of his life’s journey—a true gem of wit, skill, and the most perceptive intuition for identifying obvious dangers but, above all, the most efficient and intuitive solutions. A story without concessions to sentimentality, raw, direct, seeking neither morality nor compassion. “A sincere account of an apparent antihero who exudes lucidity and an incredible intuitive capacity,” stated Serrano Blanquer.

"In the second part of this book, the author provides us with a superb comparative analysis. We now have an invaluable resource on the testimonies of our survivors—a guide that helps us understand what we can learn from each of them—a work that only an expert philologist could have produced. The pages of this book capture Uruguay’s collective memory of the Holocaust"Crossed memories, crossed feelings. Serrano succeeds in showing us those aspects of memory that, while preserving the uniqueness of each tragedy, share common characteristics," Telias stated.

Dr. Serrano Blanquer holds a Ph.D. in Philology from the Autonomous University of Barcelona. He is a professor in the School of Communication at Ramon Llull University in Barcelona. He is the author of “A Catalan in Mauthausen” (2001), “Women in the Nazi Camps” (2003), “Spaniards in the Nazi Camps” (2004), and “A Corpse in the Mirror: The Odyssey of Juan Camacho: Gádor, Mauthausen, Montevideo” (2010).

Dr. Cherro is a psychiatrist. He teaches in the graduate program in Child and Adolescent Psychology at the Catholic University of Uruguay, at the Institute of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy of the Uruguayan Association of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy (AUDEPP), and at Clínica Uno. He was a professor and director of the Clinic of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Pereira Rossell Hospital. He taught at the Complutense University of Madrid and at Nagoya University (Japan). He served as President of the Uruguayan Society of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and of AUDEPP.
