Conference: “Democracy and Inter-American Law: Standards and Cases”

October 30, 2014
On October 1, 2014, the Faculty of Administration and Social Sciences hosted the lecture “Democracy and Inter-American Law: Standards and Cases,” presented by Dr. Jean Michel Arrighi, Secretary for Legal Affairs of the OAS (Organization of American States). The speaker analyzed the norms issued within the framework of the OAS from 1985 to the present, as well as those issued by other regional and subregional bodies when a breakdown of the constitutional order occurs. The event was organized by the faculty’s Department of International Studies.

The speaker discussed cases in which these measures were implemented or in which the advisability of their implementation was debated: the 1992 coup d’état in Haiti, the recent crisis in Paraguay (2012), cases in Peru (1993, 2000), Haiti (2000), Ecuador (2005), and Nicaragua (2004–2005), among others, and a final assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of these measures.

Arrighi holds a Ph.D. in Law and Social Sciences. He is an Associate Professor of Public International Law at the University of the Republic. He is a member of the "Institut de Droit International." He has taught courses at The Hague Academy of International Law.
