January 21, 2015
January 27 marks the International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust of the Jewish People, as established by United Nations General Assembly Resolution 60/7 of November 1, 2005.
In Uruguay, the Standing Committee of the Legislative Branch (chaired by Senator Luis Gallo Imperiale) held a special session on January 27, 2015, to mark this commemoration in the Senate Chamber of the Legislative Palace.

In turn, the Ministry of Education and Culture, together with the Central Israeli Committee of Uruguay and B’nai B’rith Uruguay, organized the event “Uruguay: 70 Years Since the Closing of Auschwitz. Resistance and Coexistence,” which took place on January 28 in the Blue Room of the Montevideo City Hall.

The keynote address was delivered by history professor Óscar Destouet, who spoke on behalf of the event’s co-organizing entities. Following this, playwright and educator Iván Solarich recited the poem “Auschwitz” by León Felipe. Excerpts from the documentaries The Short Life of Anne Frank and May Your Memory Be Love were also shown.
