Conference: “Europe Between Anti-Semitism and Islamophobia”

June 24, 2015
On June 30, 2015, the Pocitos Campus hosted a lecture titled “Europe Between Anti-Semitism and Islamophobia,” presented by Alberto Spektorowski, professor of Political Theory and Comparative Politics at Tel Aviv University. The event was organized by the Department of Jewish Studies.

“Europe is at a crossroads regarding its political identity. Islam has created a problem of security and political and cultural definition. For many, Islamophobia is a modern manifestation of old-fashioned anti-Semitism,” the speaker states.

Spektorowski holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He was a professor at the University of Wisconsin–Madison and the University of Notre Dame in Indiana (United States). He served as a political advisor to former Israeli Foreign Minister Shlomo Ben-Ami, with whom he participated alongside Palestinian officials in the Camp David peace talks in 2000.

He is the author of the book The Origins of Argentina's Right-Wing Revolution (University of Notre Dame Press, 2003), The Politics of Eugenics: Productionism, Population, and National Welfare (Routledge Press, 2013) and Nationalizing Islam (forthcoming, State University of New York Press). He is a visiting professor at Universidad ORT Uruguay.
