Lecture: “Zionism: The Latest Elections and Democracy in Israel”

On July 15, 2015, the lecture “Zionism: The Latest Elections and Democracy in Israel” was held at the Pocitos Campus, presented by Roberto Cyjon, former president of the Central Jewish Committee of Uruguay (2012–2014).


The speaker explored whether the modern State of Israel is currently experiencing a post-Zionist era. The event was organized by the Department of Jewish Studies.

The speaker gave a theoretical overview of Zionism and the political, cultural, and economic characteristics of its democracy.

Cyjon holds a degree in electrical engineering from the Technion Institute of Technology in Israel. He served as president of the Central Council for Jewish Education (1995–1998) and of the Zionist Organization of Uruguay (2003–2006). He is co-editor of the following books: Zionism a Century After Herzl, Zionist Organization of Uruguay and Artemisa Publishing (2004); and Jerusalem: 19 Years of the Prize, 19 Speeches, Zionist Organization of Uruguay and Fin de Siglo Editores (2009).

He is a fiction writer and the author of the books Of Legends and Cliffs, Melibea Publishing (1999); Damn it, Nautilus Rey Publishing (2001); Dude, I'm getting my passport, Artemisa Publishing (2003); Marked for life, Ediciones de la Banda Oriental (2006); and The truth is always elusive, Dedos Publishing (2013).
