A graduate was awarded the Santander Universities scholarship to undertake a research internship at the Autonomous University of Madrid

Diego Cazabán, a faculty member in the Biotechnology Department of the School of Engineering and a graduate of the Bachelor’s program in Biotechnology, was awarded the Santander Universities scholarship, which will enable him to undertake a research internship in July and August 2015 in the laboratory of Dr. José Manuel Guisán, a research professor at the Institute of Catalysis and Petrochemistry of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) at the Autonomous University of Madrid.

Mr. Cazabán is researching the synthesis of fatty acid esters using immobilized lipases as part of his master’s thesis, which is co-supervised by Dr. Lorena Betancor, a research professor of biotechnology in the School of Engineering, and Dr. Lorena Wilson, director of the Graduate Program at the School of Biochemical Engineering at the Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaíso, Chile.
