Symposium: “Martin Buber: The Humanist Philosopher, 50 Years After His Death”

On August 10, 2015, the Pocitos campus hosted the symposium “Martin Buber: The Humanist Philosopher, 50 Years After His Death,” featuring Father Antonio Ocaña, S.J., vicar of the Vicariate of San Pablo in Corrientes, Argentina; José Ramiro Podetti, dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Education at the University of Montevideo; and Rafael Winter, professor in the Jewish Studies Department at the Escuela Integral – Hebreo Uruguaya and vice president of the Montevideo Holocaust Memorial Center. The speakers discussed the figure of Martin Buber, a pioneer of dialogue.
Father Antonio Ocaña, S.J., is a Spanish Jesuit priest. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy and Psychology from the Complutense University of Madrid and a Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy and Catholic Theology from the University of Comillas in Madrid. He served as rector the Catholic University of Uruguay (2004–2008).

Podetti holds a Bachelor’s degree in Humanities from the University of Montevideo. He is director of the “Alberto Merthol Ferré” Institute of Latin American Studies. He teaches in the faculties of Communication, Humanities, and Law at the University of Montevideo. He is a professor in the Master’s program in Government and Public Policy at the Universidad Panamericana (Mexico). Some of his publications include: Culture and Otherness. On the Meaning of the Latin American Experience (Monte Ávila, 2008) and Uruguayan Perspectives on the Malvinas ( Fin de Siglo, 2013).

Mr. Winter holds a Master’s degree in Contemporary Judaism from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and specializes in Jewish Education for the Diaspora at the Melton Center for Jewish Education. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in History from the Faculty of Humanities and Sciences at the University of the Republic. He is a member of the Jewish-Christian Fellowship of Uruguay.

The event was organized by the Jewish-Christian Fellowship and the university’s Department of Jewish Studies.
