Social Media Workshop: Its Potential for Teaching

October 30, 2015
On October 23, 2015, the workshop “Social Media: Its Potential for Teaching” was held, organized by the Center for Continuing Education in Higher Education (CAES) of the Institute of Education.

The session was led by Dr. Carina Lion, an instructor in the Fundamentals of Educational Technology and Distance Education course within the Education Sciences program at the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters of the University of Buenos Aires.

Social media are part of today’s cultural landscape and are integral to processes now referred to as “collective intelligence” (Levy, 2004). This workshop aims to discuss and explore their pedagogical and cognitive potential in order to rethink university teaching and, consequently, help improve student learning.

Participants examine teaching practices that need to be reimagined in light of the new realities arising from the intersection of technology and pedagogy.

Lion holds a Ph.D. in Education, a specialization in Teacher Training, and a Bachelor’s degree in Educational Sciences from the University of Buenos Aires (UBA). She is a researcher at the UBA’s Institute for Research in Educational Sciences. She serves as director of the UBA’s Center for Innovation in Technology and Pedagogy. She is a member of the Conectar Igualdad Advisory Council of the Government of Argentina. She is a thesis advisor for the Doctor of Education program, a faculty member, and a graduate tutor at the Institute of Education.
