He held meetings with the Director General, Prof. Charlotte S. de Grünberg, and the rector, Dr. Jorge Grünberg. He delivered a lecture titled “Challenges in Materials Engineering,” co-organized with Keren Kayemet Leisrael, and spoke at a meeting with students in the Biotechnology Engineering program and the Bachelor’s program in Biotechnology.

During the meeting with the students, he spoke about his discovery of the icosahedral phase in rapidly solidified aluminum alloy crystals. This discovery challenged established paradigms in materials science and opened up a new field of study: quasiperiodic crystals.
For his part, Enrique Topolansky, coordinator of theuniversity’s Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship(CIE), presented the activities carried out by the center.
Dr. Shechtman earned his B.Sc. (1966), M.Sc. (1968), and Ph.D. (1972) at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology, where he joined the faculty in 1975. He is a distinguished professor in the Philips Tobias Chair of Materials Science at the Technion. He is a member of the Israel Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering of the United States, and the European Academy of Sciences. He has received numerous awards from scientific societies for his research, as well as a prize for teaching excellence from the Technion.
