ORT Space at the 13th Punta del Este Jewish Film Festival

The 13th Punta del Este Jewish Film Festival will take place from February 6 to 10, 2016, at the Conrad Hotel in Punta del Este. The festival’s ORT Space will screen films and feature lectures organized by the Department of Jewish Studies.

Activities at the festival's ORT Space:


Sunday, February 7 

6:00 p.m. - Screening of Norman Jewison's film *Fiddler on the Roof* in Room 2 of the Conrad Hotel.
A tribute to Shalom Aleichem on the 100th anniversary of his death, to whom Universidad ORT Uruguay its 2016 Jewish calendar.

The film will be introduced by Prof. Luis Elbert, a film critic and researcher. He is the associate director of the Valparaíso International Film Festival in Chile. He is the author of Eisenstein-Pudovkin and Dr. Frankenstein's Office. Lecturer at the School of Communication and Design at Universidad ORT Uruguay in Universidad ORT Uruguay.



Monday, February 8

7:00 p.m. – Book launch for *El llanto de la maleta* (the story of two sisters separated by the Nazis).
The book was published by Milenio and written by Dr. David Serrano Blanquer, a professor at the Blanquerna School of Communication at Ramon Llull University in Barcelona. He is the author of A Catalan in Mauthausen (2001), Women in Nazi concentration camps (2003), Spaniards in Nazi camps (2004), A Corpse in the Mirror: The Odyssey of Juan Camacho: Gádor, Mauthausen, Montevideo (2010) and Isaac Borojovich and the Memory of the Holocaust (2013).

The speaker will be Ruperto Long, Minister of the Court of Auditors and former Senator (2005–2010). 
The launch will feature Giza Alterwjn, one of the book's main characters.


8:00 p.m. – Lecture: “The Free Reprinting of *Mein Kampf*: Who Benefits in the Contemporary World?”
It will be presented by Roberto Cyjon, former president of the Zionist Organization of Uruguay (2003–2006) and the Central Jewish Committee of Uruguay (2012–2014). The speaker will discuss the reissue of the book Adolf Hitler, *Mein Kampf*. A critical edition.



Tuesday, February 9

7:00 p.m. – Lecture: “Identity and Democracy in Europe: Between Immigration and Islamic Terrorism.”
The event will be led by Dr. Alberto Spektorowski, professor of Political Theory and Comparative Politics at Tel Aviv University and visiting professor at the School of Management and Social Sciences at Universidad ORT Uruguay. The speaker will discuss migration trends and their implications for European politics.


8:00 p.m. - Screening of the short film *Liu Xia Lai* 
The short film, directed by Ignazio Acerenza, a graduate of the Bachelor’s Degree in Communication with a focus on Audiovisual Studies, and produced as part of the 2014 ORT Digital Program, won the Best Fiction Short Film award at the Detour: New Cinema Festival. This event, which features exclusively Uruguayan audiovisual works, took place from November 3 to 7, 2015, in Montevideo.

8:15 PM - World premiere:Menazka (The Saucepan).
A documentary directed by Dr. David Serrano Blanquer and co-produced by the Blanquerna School of Communication at Ramon Llull University in Barcelona and Universidad ORT Uruguay.

The documentary features the testimony of Isaac Borojovich, a survivor living in Uruguay who was imprisoned in several concentration camps between 1941 and 1945, the last of which was Bergen-Belsen. The documentary chronicles Isaac’s return to this concentration camp accompanied by Camino, a Spanish high school student interested in the Holocaust.



Wednesday, February 10

7:00 p.m. – Lecture: “The New Middle East: Daesh and the Redefinition of the Region’s Political Landscape.”
The event will be led by Dr. Alberto Spektorowski, professor of Political Theory and Comparative Politics at Tel Aviv University and visiting professor at the School of Management and Social Sciences at Universidad ORT Uruguay. The speaker will discuss the current situation in the Middle East and the Islamic State.
