Publication of the book *Admission Systems, Enrolment Policies, and Tutoring and Retention Strategies for Students in Higher Education*

In February 2015, Wolters Kluwer Spain published the book *Admission Systems, Retention Policies, and Tutoring and Retention Strategies for Students in Higher Education*, edited by Dr. Joaquín Gairín, a visiting professor in the Master’s Program in Educational Management and a professor in the Department of Applied Pedagogy at the Autonomous University of Barcelona.

The book was published as part of the Accedes project (Access and Academic Success of Vulnerable Groups in High-Risk Environments in Latin America). It contains reports on systems for access to and retention in higher education in Latin American countries.

“In particular, there is concern about the impact that certain ways of organizing and delivering education may have on the actual chances that students from vulnerable groups (indigenous peoples, women, people with disabilities, minorities, migrants, groups with a low HDI, students from rural and non-traditional areas, among others) will complete their university studies. After all, advancement through education continues to be considered an important factor in social mobility and another tool for improving the necessary social cohesion,” states Dr. Gairín.

The book includes the chapter “Access, Retention, and Graduation of Vulnerable Groups in Uruguay,” authored by academics from Universidad ORT Uruguay: Álvaro Casas, advisor at the European Institute for Training and Consulting and a graduate of the Diploma in Educational Planning and Management; Lic. Carolina Guedes, student advisor at the School of Architecture; Andrea Tejera, professor of Developing an Organizational Improvement Plan at the Institute of Education; and Dr. María Inés Vázquez, academic coordinator of the Master’s in Educational Management.
