Conference: “The Role of the State in Uruguay’s Pluralistic Society”

On Tuesday, September 20, 2016, at 7:30 p.m., the Pocitos Campus (2633 España Blvd.) will host a lecture titled “The Role of the State in Uruguay’s Pluralistic Society,” presented by Dr. Carmen Asiaín, president of the Latin American Consortium for Religious Freedom and alternate senator for the National Party.

The speaker will address the role of public administration regarding the religious factor in a pluralistic society and in a state governed by the rule of law such as Uruguay.

Asiaín holds a Ph.D. in Law and Social Sciences. She is a professor of Law and Religion at the University of Montevideo and at the Mons. Mariano Soler Faculty of Theology in Uruguay. She is a visiting professor of Law and Religion at the Catholic University of Uruguay. She is a member of the Ethics Tribunal of the National Party.

This event, organized by the Jewish-Christian Confederation of Uruguay with the support of the university’s Department of Jewish Studies, is part of the lecture series “Building a Secular Uruguay: Different Perspectives, Contributions, and Commitments.”
