He served as Prime Minister of Israel for two terms, from 1984 to 1986 and from 1995 to 1996; he was a member of the Knesset (the Israeli parliament) from 1959 to 2007. He held ministerial portfolios including Absorption and Immigration; Defense; Transportation and Communications; and served as Minister of Foreign Affairs on four occasions, among other positions during his long career in public service. From 2007 to 2014, he served as President of Israel.
In 1994, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, along with other leaders, for his role in the negotiations leading to the 1993 Oslo Accords.
