Panel: “Elie Wiesel: Champion of Justice and Truth”

On October 19, 2016, the panel discussion “Elie Wiesel: Champion of Justice and Truth” was held at the Pocitos Campus. Participants included Dr. Eduardo Kohn, director of B’nai B’rith International for Latin America, and Dr. Gerardo Caetano, president of the Superior Council of the Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences (FLACSO) and academic coordinator of the Political Observatory at the Institute of Political Science of the University of the Republic. The speakers reflected on Elie Wiesel as a man and an activist.
Kohn holds a Ph.D. in Diplomacy from the University of the Republic. He served as general administrator of the Escuela Integral Hebreo Uruguaya (1976–1980). He was executive director of the National Council of B’nai B’rith Uruguay (1980–1984). He is the co-author of the book Zionism, 100 Years After Herzl (2004).

Caetano holds a Ph.D. in History from the National University of La Plata in Argentina. He is a full member of the National Academy of Letters of Uruguay and the National Academy of Sciences of Uruguay. He is a Level III researcher in Uruguay’s National Research System. He is a researcher and full professor (Grade 5) at the University of the Republic.

Special guest: Prof. Rita Vinocur, Executive Director of the Holocaust Memorial Center, Uruguay.

The event is organized by the Dr. Jacobo Hazán Department of Interreligious Dialogue at B'nai B'rith Uruguay and the university's Department of Jewish Studies.
