Lecture: “Cervantes and Jewish Tradition”

November 3, 2016
On November 15, 2016, the lecture “Cervantes and the Jewish Tradition” was held at the Pocitos Campus, presented by Prof. Ruth Fine, holder of the Salomon & Victoria Cohen Chair in Iberian Studies at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem and director of the Institute of Western Cultures. Cervantes was born three generations after the expulsion of the Jews from Spain; the speaker reflected on the impact of this event on his work.
This year, the Royal Spanish Academy elected Prof. Fine as a foreign corresponding member, a distinction that recognizes individuals for their research, studies, and publications on various topics related to the Spanish language or literature.

Prof. Fine was also awarded the Order of Civil Merit by the King of Spain for her contribution to Spanish culture.

She served as president of the Israeli Association of Hispanists and vice president of the International Association of Hispanists.

The event was organized by Friends of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the university’s Department of Jewish Studies.
