Conference: “Profitable Business Models with High Social Value: Feasibility and Impact”

July 31, 2017
On July 27, 2017, the Faculty of Business and Social Sciences hosted a lecture titled “Profitable Business Models with High Social Value: Feasibility and Impact,” presented by Michael Chu, a full professor of Business Administration and researcher at Harvard Business School. The speaker shared examples and insights on the implications of such models and their impact on economic and social development.

Over the past 25 years, private-sector initiatives around the world have ventured into areas traditionally associated with the public sector and civil society. Beyond corporate social responsibility or corporate philanthropy, what distinguishes these initiatives is their complete alignment with the company’s strategy: business models that aim to be profitable like other companies with similar characteristics, while providing goods and services with high social value. This topic is the focus of Prof. Michael Chu’s teaching and research.

Chu is a tenured professor in the Social Enterprise Initiative of the General Management Group at Harvard Business School. He is the managing director and co-founder of IGNIA Fund, a venture capital firm in Mexico dedicated to investing in disruptive companies that deliver high-impact products and services. He is a senior advisor and co-founder of Grupo Pegasus, a private equity firm based in Buenos Aires.
