Students won second prize in the "HI-COOKING Castey 2008" international competition, Spain – November

November 26, 2008
Irma Fraile and Eugenia Martínez, sixth-semester students in the Bachelor of Industrial Design program, won second prize in the international "HI-COOKING Castey 2008" competition held in Spain and sponsored by Castey, a manufacturer of cast-iron pots and pans. The theme of the competition was the redesign of a grill. The students submitted three proposals, and the one selected was "Cuisson." The design process was carried out under the guidance and supervision of Industrial Designer Javier Terra, a faculty member of the program.

The jury praised the concept behind this project: a grill with two surfaces that allows for two different cooking methods depending on how it is used—open or closed. When open, it functions as a traditional griddle; when closed, it becomes an oven, enabling a type of cooking that traditional griddles do not offer.

The jury was composed of:

  • Ramón Benedito. Industrial designer. National Design Award winner.
  • Joan Roca. Renowned chef.
  • Jaume von Arend (Fòrum Gastronòmic). Communications Consultant.
  • Xavier Majoral (GiDi Association). Representative of a cultural design organization.
  • Mili Alonso. Castey Representative.

Irma Fraile, Eugenia Martínez, and Javier Terra are members of ElStudio, a multidisciplinary design studio comprised of alumni, faculty, and students from Universidad ORT Uruguay.
