A student took first place in Genexus' Smart Challenge University Edition competition

September 13, 2011
Matías Preciozzi, a student in the Software Analyst program, took first place in the Smart Challenge University Edition competition, organized by Genexus. Preciozzi developed a functional app that allows users to identify monuments, buildings, squares, and other points of interest using a smartphone. His prize included an iPad 2, a Genexus Kit, and a paid internship at Artech, where he will be able to further develop his project.

The app proposed by Preciozzi will provide users with information related to the site of interest: historical data and information in various multimedia formats (text, audio, and video). What makes the app innovative is that, instead of searching for the monument in the guide using traditional methods, users simply take a photo of the site of interest, and the app will recognize the monument and then provide information about it. It makes extensive use of the hardware found in today’s mobile devices: GPS, accelerometer, compass, and camera.

Martín Arzuaga and Javier Fiorina, students of Systems Engineering and Electronics Engineering respectively, also received recognition for developing an app called “Guía T.” This app provides information on points of interest in a city, such as addresses, phone numbers, hours, images, and prices. If GPS is available, it will locate the user and search for information regarding the nearby area or city where the person is located. At each point of interest, users can leave comments and recommendations for future visitors.
