Conference on “Agile Project Management”

July 30, 2013
On July 4, 2013, the Faculty of Engineering hosted a lecture titled “Agile Project Management” presented by Mariel Feder, Head of Systems and Project Manager at Hípica Rioplatense Uruguay and Coordinator of the Project Management Area at the Faculty of Engineering’s Software Engineering Laboratory. The speaker discussed the SCRUM Agile Management methodology, identified its weaknesses, and proposed the most appropriate interpretation of its principles. The conference was organized by the School of Engineering and the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers), Technology Management Chapter.

The speaker also analyzed the risks associated with the improper application of agile methodologies, so that project managers can be equipped to decide in which cases or projects it is advisable to apply this methodology in the best way possible to maximize the results obtained from its application.

“The reality in the world of information technology has made the incorporation of changes during product development the norm rather than the exception, perhaps more so than in other disciplines. This has led to new IT product development processes, known as agile methodologies, which are linked to new forms of management called Agile Management methodologies,” the speaker noted.

“The concepts of the Agile paradigm have been widely accepted by clients and developers. However, under the umbrella of Agile Management, it is very common to see misinterpretations of the most important concepts of this trend. And it is interesting to note that these misinterpretations recur in different environments (academic and industrial) and across different organizations. These points include elements related to the application of the strategy, the motivations for adopting it, and how to integrate the management strategy with other activities in the software development process, as well as the assumption that certain elements simply disappear by ‘applying Agile’ or ‘being Agile,’ she added.

Ms. Feder holds a Master’s degree in Computing and Information Systems and a degree in Systems Engineering from Universidad ORT Uruguay. She has a Postgraduate Diploma in Computing fromthe University of Oxford and is a Project Manager Professional certified by theProject Management Institute (PMI). She is a professor of Software Project Management in the School of Engineering.
