"Character Design" Workshop for High School Students

On September 23, 2013, the “Character Design” workshop for high school students took place at the School of Design within the Faculty of Communication and Design. The workshop was led by Robert Lence, a faculty member at the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) and a visiting professor in the Bachelor’s Program in Animation and Video Games. The workshop consisted of an introduction to the basic concepts and fundamentals of animation. The activity, aimed at 10th and 11th grade students, took place as part of the “FIA’13” International Animation Festival, which was held on September 23 and 24, 2013, at the faculty.

Mr. Lence holds a B.A. in English Literature from the University of Michigan and studied in programme Character Animation programme at CalArts. He has worked as a storyboard artist at Walt Disney, Pixar, DreamWorks, Warner Bros., and Hanna-Barbera, among others. His credits include films such as “Beauty and the Beast,” “Bugs, ” “Tinker Bell 3, ” “The Lion King,” and “Shrek.” He was co-supervisor on Pixar’s “Toy Story” (1995), the first fully computer-animated film.
