Conference: "The Rise of New Political Parties in Europe: Populism or a Deepening of Democracy?"

April 16, 2015
On April 29, 2015, the university’s Pocitos campus hosted a lecture titled “The Emergence of New Political Parties in Europe: Populism or the Deepening of Democracy?” presented by Dr. Filipe Vasconcelos Romão, a researcher at the Observatory of Foreign Relations at the Autonomous University of Lisbon and a visiting professor at the School of Management and Social Sciences.

The speaker analyzed the context of the growing decline in popularity of ruling parties in most European countries and the emergence of new political parties and movements that are threatening decades of dominance by "traditional" parties.

Syriza, Podemos, Ciudadanos, the Five Star Movement, the National Front, and UKIP are just a few examples of parties that are very different from one another, but share a common ambition to radically change the political landscape of their respective countries.

Dr. Vasconcelos Romão holds a Ph.D. (Summa Cum Laude) in International Relations from the University of Coimbra, Portugal.
