Conference: "Implications and Applications of Network Theory in Organizational Development"

May 31, 2008
On May 22, the ORT Pocitos Auditorium hosted the lecture "Six Degrees of Separation: Implications and Applications of Network Theory in Organizational Development," presented by Dr. Ignacio Porras, a professor and researcher at the Bolivarian University (UB) and coordinator of the Master’s Program in E-Government at the Metropolitan Technological University (UTEM) in Chile. The event was organized by the Institute of Education.

The purpose of this conference was to reflect on the possibilities and limitations of the concepts, theories, and methods of the Social Network Analysis approach as applied to the design of organizational development strategies. The metaphor of networks is one of the most evocative images of our time. The image of a clockwork mechanism or that of a functioning organism no longer serves to explain the world in the era of the Information and Knowledge Society. Instead, images of organizational networks, personal networks, knowledge networks, or the Internet itself evoke powerful associations and come closer to that idea of fluidity and decentralized self-organization that we recognize in contemporary social reality.

The speaker holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from the Complutense University of Madrid and a Specialization Diploma in Constitutional Law and Political Science from the Center for Constitutional Studies in Madrid. He is the director of ARSChile, a consulting firm specializing in social media analysis. He is a faculty member in the Master’s Program in Cooperation and Development at the Ortega y Gasset Institute of the Complutense University of Madrid, and at the UNESCO Chair in Sustainable Human Development at the University of Girona, Spain. He serves as a consultant to governments and international organizations on issues related to strengthening social capital, citizen participation, and the social use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs).
