Two final projects from the School of Engineering were selected among the five Uruguayan finalists in the first round of evaluation for the 2010 Intel Challenge. As a result, they advanced to the second phase, in which one project will be chosen to compete against those from the rest of Latin America. This is the first year that Uruguayan entrepreneurs can participate in this competition, organized by Intel in partnership with Emprear, with support from ORT University and the National Agency for Research and Innovation (ANII).

The university startups were selected from a total of 27 submitted during the registration period, which ran through June 1, 2010.

A startup by Mariana Gutiérrez, a graduate in Telecommunications Engineering.
Description: Finding discounts via cell phone. Users will be able to access discounted services and products located in the area near their current location.

Project: Pedidos Ya
A startup by Álvaro García, a graduate with a Bachelor’s degree in Systems; Ariel Burschtin, a graduate with a degree in Systems Engineering; and Ruben Sosenke, a graduate with a degree in Information Technology Analysis.

Each finalist will receive support from a Uruguayan mentor and a U.S. mentor who will assist them in developing the Business Plan to be presented at the finals, advising them on strategies and networking. This team of mentors is composed of established entrepreneurs, investors, business managers, and specialists.

Additionally, the five finalists will receive scholarships to participate in a five-week seminar for entrepreneurs led by EMPREAR and will have access to EmpreWare, software that facilitates the development and monitoring of the company’s business plan.
