"Emerging Architects" Series

October 1, 2010
On September 1 and 2, the “Emerging Architects” series kicked off at the School of Architecture; the series takes place on the first Wednesday and Thursday of every month. On these occasions, young architects from our community and the region showcase their recent work, their working methods, and their understanding of contemporary architecture. On Wednesday, September 1, architect Luciano Benites presented his work, and on September 2, the MBAD studio—comprising architects Mario Báez and Adrián Durán—will do the same.

Architect Benites earned his degree in architecture from ORT University in 2007. He led the firm Metrocinco – Arquitectos Asociados, which he founded with four partners. Since 2008, he has been working on personal projects as an independent architect. That same year, he was invited to teach and join the faculty of the Project Design course at the School of Architecture. Among his most important recent projects are his research on the incorporation of shredded tire rubber (GNT) into precast concrete components, his article titled “Sustainable Architecture: Is It Possible in Developing Countries?” and the design and construction of his first sustainable home in southern Brazil, in Santa Catarina, in 2009. In September, he will begin a Master’s degree in Architectural Design at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC) in Barcelona.

Architects Mario Báez and Adrián Durán graduated with degrees in Architecture from the University of the Republic in 2002. Directors of MBAD arquitectos, collaborators on projects by MBAD arquitectos + X-Architects Dubai-UAE. Project instructors at the Sheps Workshop in the Faculty of Architecture at the University of the Republic. They have won awards in numerous competitions, including an honorable mention for their project for the new NCI community center and synagogue (2005), third prize for the projects for the Eastern Regional University Center (2009), the Uruguayan pavilion for the 2010 Shanghai Expo, and most recently for the Latin American ideas competition for the Bicentennial Central Library of the Municipality of Rosario.
