Ståle Wig arrived in Havana in 2015, at a time when cracks were beginning to appear that foreshadowed imminent changes. As an anthropologist, he decided to study the situation from the inside: he settled in the city, bought a 1953 Buick, and started working as a taxi driver.

In this talk, he will share what he discovered: the concrete dreams of real people and the structures that, once again, stood in their way.

Havana Taxi: Cuba and the Years of Hope is a chronicle that traces the story of a car and three regular passengers against the backdrop of momentous changes—access to the internet, the thaw in relations with the United States, the death of Fidel Castro—and the persistent sense that something big was about to happen.
