Against the backdrop of an international context marked by profound geopolitical and economic changes, the relationship between Uruguay and China is taking on increasing strategic importance.
This conference aims to provide a forum for analysis and reflection on the main opportunities and challenges arising from the bilateral relationship, addressing key issues such as trade, investment, political cooperation, and Uruguay’s position on the global stage.
Drawing on Ambassador Fernando Lugris’s diplomatic experience, the aim is to provide insights for understanding the present and envisioning the future of this vital relationship following the presidential visit by Uruguay’s head of state, Yamandú Orsi.

Career diplomat and holder of a bachelor’s degree in International Relations. Currently Director General for Cultural Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uruguay (since October 2025). Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Kyrgyz Republic and Ambassador-designate to the Republic of Tajikistan (December 2024 to October 2025). Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the People’s Republic of China and Mongolia (2015–2025).
