Selection for the Annecy International Animation Film Festival

The world's best animated films are coming to the FIA with a special screening: the audience selection from the Annecy International Animation Film Festival will be shown.

Founded in 1960, the festival is the world’s leading event in the field of animation. Animated films—including cartoons, stop-motion, and other techniques—compete in categories such as feature films, short films, student projects, and films produced exclusively for the internet.

At the 2018 edition of the Festival alone, more than 3,000 films from 93 countries were screened. On that occasion, there were approximately 12,000 attendees.

This screening is made possible by the French Embassy in Uruguay and the Institut Français If Cinema.

Contest

A total of 250 short films from 22 countries were in competition: Argentina, Germany, Brazil, Belgium, Cuba, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Spain, the United States, France, Hungary, Israel, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, Poland, the United Kingdom, Russia, Romania, Uruguay, and Venezuela.

Awards Ceremony

Industry leaders and representatives attended this international awards ceremony, where a distinguished jury recognized talent in the art of storytelling through animation—works that move audiences around the world alike with their form and content—across various categories.

Workshops for high school students

In recent editions, animation workshops were also held for high school students; this free event brought together more than 100 high school students from across the country.

Conferences

“Region Four Animation”

The talk focused on the development of Latin American animation, how the industry has evolved in recent years, and how animation remains in its infancy in our region despite continuing to move in the right direction.

Mexican Andrés Couturier is a director, screenwriter, animator storyboard artist. He directed the feature films *Here Comes the Grouch* (2017, Ánima – Prime Focus), *Don Gato: The Beginning of the Gang* (2015, Ánima Estudios – Warner Brothers, nominated for the Platino Awards), and Mighty Mage Comand (2014, for Netflix). He was responsible for the animation and storyboard for El Santos contra la Tetona Mendoza (2012, awarded by the National Chamber of Cinematography) and for the storyboard and character design for Don Gato y su pandilla (2011), among other projects. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Graphic Communication Design (Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana) and a bachelor’s degree in Dramatic Arts (Universidad Autónoma de México), has a certificate in Artistic Illustration from the Universidad del Claustro de Sor Juana, and subsequently pursued studies in animation film, master classes, and story animation, among others.

“Cinema 4D”

Easy to learn and extremely powerful: Cinema 4D is the perfect software package for all 3D artists who want stunning results, whether they’re beginners or experienced professionals. ANIMAGENES SRL, Maxon’s official reseller in Uruguay, presents Cinema 4D in its brand-new R20 version. We’ll build scenes, exploring some of its capabilities and features for creating sophisticated animations. We’ll also take a look at how ANIMAGENES has used Cinema 4D to create various projects (both artistic and commercial) in Uruguay, and provide an introduction to the potential of integrating it with Adobe After Effects.

Uruguayan Gabriel Markarian has combined his passion for animation, motion graphics, and video post-production with music creation and production. Markarian has been navigating these two worlds of rhythm, expression, and emotion since his early teens. As he began his professional career, he studied character animation and later graphic design. He gained significant professional experience when he was selected for the position of editor and post-producer at the production company Metrópolis Films, a role he held for several years. Currently the director of the ANIMAGENES studio, he has created and participated in hundreds of audiovisual projects for national and international clients, composed original music for film and TV, developed interactive games, and worked on personal artistic projects. Currently, ANIMAGENES is the Official Reseller of Maxon / Cinema4D for Uruguay and an authorized reseller of Adobe products in Uruguay.
