Universidad ORT Uruguay the finals of the National Math Olympiad

This Sunday, October 20, ORT hosted the finals of the National Math Olympiad, an event that brought together 219 students to showcase their skills in solving math problems.

Starting early in the morning, young people from across the country gathered to take part in this event, which was designed to test their ingenuity and creativity in solving math problems.

The four-hour test began at 9:00 a.m., during which participants tackled exercises designed to assess their analytical thinking and math skills.

The event, organized as it is every year by the Mathematics Club, concluded with an awards ceremony at 4:00 p.m., where the finalists’ achievements were celebrated.

What is the Math Com-Partida?

Com-Partida de Matemática is a nonprofit organization founded in 1992 that is responsible for organizing the Math Olympiad.

Its main goal is to promote problem-solving as a key tool in learning, helping students develop skills such as critical thinking, creativity, and perseverance.

For more than 30 years, it has engaged more than 300 coordinators across the country, who organize workshops, promote activities, and prepare students for the various stages of the National Math Olympiad.

In addition, they are responsible for selecting the students who will represent Uruguay in international competitions, such as the Ibero-American and International Mathematical Olympiads.

"It's a party, not a competition"

Professor Nelson Chocca, director of the Mathematics Department, expressed his gratitude for the support received from Universidad ORT Uruguay.

"This support has been essential for us, because the way we are able to organize a final is thanks to the collaboration of institutions that recognize the work we do and want to join us in this effort," he said.

Chocca emphasized that the Olympiad is not just an academic competition. "For the students, it's a celebration and an opportunity to share and learn," he said.

Participants in the Olympiad are divided into levels based on their grade level.

Level V

  • Gold: Mateo Domenech - Colegio Seminario
  • Silver: Camila Pazos - Juan XXIII School
  • Bronze: Ignacio Seré - PREU

Mathematics Olympiad Scholarship

Since 2017, Universidad ORT Uruguay the winner of the National Mathematics Olympiad who is currently in their senior year of high school a full scholarship to begin one of the university programs offered by the institution in March.

In this edition, Mateo Domenech, the gold medalist in Category V, was awarded the scholarship to pursue his university studies at ORT. 

This initiative aims to support young Uruguayans who excel in analytical thinking and problem-solving and wish to pursue a college degree.

Parent and Teacher Involvement

In addition to the tests for students, a talk was held during the Olympiad for parents and teachers on the use of generative artificial intelligence (GAI) as a tool to support learning at home.

The session, led by Eduardo Mangarelli, dean of the School of Engineering, explored how this technology can help young people find solutions to problems, fostering their critical thinking skills.

The risks associated with AI, such as bias and hallucinations, were also discussed, along with strategies to help adults make the most of the technology’s benefits in a responsible manner.

One of the most important values promoted by the Olympics is collaboration among students.

The event fosters teamwork and solidarity among participants, who train together and share knowledge, even in the most competitive situations.

Universidad ORT Uruguay its commitment to promoting mathematics education in the country, noting that problem-solving is not just an academic skill, but a vital tool for everyday life.
