This recognition highlights his career and contributions in the field and showcases his work within the global engineering community.
Being an IEEE Senior Member signifies having achieved a level of experience, leadership, and sustained impact within the technology community.
In this regard, Pombo emphasizes that such awards go beyond the individual: they help highlight the caliber of Uruguayan professionals on the international stage and strengthen the country’s presence on the global technology scene.
Artificial Intelligence and Education
In addition to this recognition, Pombo was one of the experts consulted for a report published in the "Domingo" section of El País on April 12, 2026, regarding the role of Uruguayan engineers around the world and the impact of artificial intelligence.
There, he offered a nuanced perspective on the changes brought about by technology: “AI has no intentions; it is humans who exercise judgment,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of the human role in increasingly automated contexts.
He also noted that the impact of AI should not be viewed as a complete replacement of jobs, but rather as a transformation of tasks: “AI has no intentions; it does not replace entire professions, but it changes the way we work.”
Rethinking how we learn
One of the focal points of his analysis is education. According to Pombo, artificial intelligence presents challenges, but also opportunities to rethink teaching models.
“The educational process is being somewhat sidelined,” he warned, noting that many tasks traditionally associated with learning are being automated.
However, far from taking a negative view, he proposes a shift in perspective: “There is an opportunity to rethink how we teach and how we assess in a world where the rules are changing.”
Next challenge: Urucon
In addition to this recognition, Pombo will play a key role in the upcoming edition of Urucon, where he will serve as Chair of Publications and Publicity.
The event will take place in the auditorium of the Telecommunications Tower, Antel's headquarters, and will bring together leading figures from the tech industry to discuss innovation and trends.
Engineering with a Global Perspective
His recognition as a Senior Member, his participation in discussions on artificial intelligence, and his role in international events all point to a common goal: building an engineering field with a global impact from Uruguay.
In this regard, his work contributes not only from a technical perspective but also through a critical reflection on the relationship between technology, education, and society.
