She served as a visiting professorat the School of Design through a Fulbright Specialists Program grant from September 3 to 17. She came to ORT through a connection withFabián Barros, MA, academic coordinator of Design, Art, and Technology.
He attended classes in the Bachelor's program in Design, Art, and Technology, visited the school'sOpen House, and participated in the lecture series on Contemporary Design Trends.
Finally, he ledworkshopson cyanotype, block printing patterns, botanical monotypes, and natural and experimental processes (using cyanotype) for students at the college from Thursday, September 12, through Tuesday, September 17.
About the workshops and their experience
Each workshop was attended by between 20 and 40 students, and the central theme was the intersection of art, ecology, and environmental sustainability.
“Colorado has undergone ecological changes due to climate change, deforestation, urban development, and wildfires, which have impacted the viability of species. I’ve noticed the disruption of the balance in these ecosystems. I was wondering, ‘Is something similar happening in Uruguay?’”
In the cyanotype workshop, participants were asked to create prints using sunlight and water to explore the beauty and fragility of species—whether endangered or not—and to raise awareness about the conservation and protection of their habitats.
In the block-printing pattern workshop, participants created prints of invasive plants and aquatic species using block printing, collage, and image transfer, exploring the impact of these species on ecosystems.
In the botanical monotype class, students created botanical monotypes and collages to capture nature's patterns.
Finally, in the workshop on natural and experimental processes (using cyanotype), participants learned how to create eco-prints, anthotypes, and natural dyes using materials found in nature.
I learned just as much from the students as they did from me. I was impressed by the work they produced, which reflects their understanding of the materials and techniques I taught, as well as the topics we were discussing.
Monico will select some works by students from ORT and MSU Denver from similar workshops he will lead to create an exhibition at the American university.
The professor was impressed by the university's dedication to its students, the creativity and academic caliber of the faculty, and the innovative curriculum designed to prepare students for the future.
“I attended one of Fabián’s classes, and he was teaching the students how to work with AI and write code to create animations based on historical art compositions. It was really dynamic and engaging to see the students bring all these elements together.”
What is the Fulbright Scholarship?
The program was established in 1946 by J. William Fulbright, a senator from Arkansas. Following World War II, its goal was to foster educational exchanges between the United States and other countries in order to promote tolerance and respect and prevent future armed conflicts.
Today, the program maintains partnerships with governments and private institutions in 150 countries and has awarded scholarships to approximately 250,000 students.
Among these institutions is the Universidad ORT Uruguay, which offers scholarships in biotechnology, energy, ICTs, creative industries, and more. Students, graduates, and faculty members from around the world are eligible to participate in the program.
