Thanks to the waste reduction and recycling strategies implemented, 113 tons of waste were generated in 2019, of which nearly seven tons were recycled:
- 5,822 kg of paper and cardboard
- 1,041 kg of PET plastic
In 2019, the responsible consumption campaign was also launched, and in October of that same year, the first Sustainable Expo was held, which was designated as an event of interest by the Ministry of Housing, Land Use Planning, and the Environment. This event provided an opportunity to showcase projects by students, graduates, and faculty members of the university related to sustainable development.
The Deputy Coordinator of Environmental Management, Inés Tiscornia, M.A., highlights the goals that have been achieved but stresses that there is still much work to be done, such as optimizing processes to reduce waste, exploring redesign options, and incorporating more courses related to this field into various degree programs.
He also highlights the importance of continuing to raise awareness about these issues, since in Montevideo alone, households generate 1,200 tons of waste per day, and only a very small percentage of that waste is recycled; education is key to changing these figures.
