After evaluating 15 projects nationwide, the authorities selected the proposal submitted by the firm of Architect Cabrera, academic coordinator of the Specialization Diploma in Sustainable Architecture at the School of Architecture of Universidad ORT Uruguay.
This project will involve the construction of 80 prototypes strategically located according to each family’s needs. The designs range from a wet unit consisting of a kitchen and bathroom—which is added to existing homes—to complete homes featuring two wet units, a bedroom, a kitchen, and a bathroom.
Architect Eliseo Cabrera, project director La Casa Uruguaya, highlighted the advantages of this sustainable and environmentally friendly construction system. In an interview with the local media outlet Río Negro Ahora, Cabrera emphasized that each kit imported to the department, made with treated domestic wood, along with installation costs, has a lower environmental impact, achieving significant improvements in construction time, efficiency, and sustainability.

In this regard, Cabrera noted:
These are energy-efficient homes, free of dampness, where energy use for heating and cooling is optimized.
This project not only marks a true milestone in the field of sustainable architecture in Río Negro, but it also highlights the city government’s management capabilities by stepping outside its comfort zone. “With the same resources, they’ve managed things better; they stepped outside their comfort zone and took a risk,” Cabrera emphasized.
With the aim of training work teams for construction projects, Cabrera will be conducting a technical training session for workshop staff at the Río Negro Departmental Government on Monday, November 20, and Tuesday, November 21.
In this context, Cabrera, together with Mr. Omar Cobiella, who is in charge of the production workshop at La Casa Uruguaya, will conduct the training in a carpentry workshop set up at the legendary Anglo meat-processing plant, where municipal workers will receive specialized training in the fabrication and assembly of emergency housing units.
The School of Architecture at Universidad ORT Uruguay professionals such as architect Eliseo Cabrera, who lead initiatives that have a positive impact on the community while reinforcing the commitment to the development of wood architecture, spearheading the commitment and transformation toward a more sustainable, efficient, and smart future.
