Artificial intelligence as an enabler of artistic work

September 18, 2023
The arrival of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the professional world is bringing about profound changes in the way we work and interact. In particular, generative AI is emerging as an innovative technology with revolutionary potential across various fields. And art and design are no exception to this trend.

“All technology is a product of creativity, and creativity, in turn, enriches technology.” This was the view expressed by Fabián Barros, MA—academic coordinator of Design, Art, and Technology—at the event “I Am Not a Robot, where he spoke with Enrique Topolansky, MBA—director of the university’s Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship.

Educational programs that combine art and technology are growing day by day around the world, as they serve as a foundation “for artistic creation, content development, computer-aided design, and experimental animation.” Undoubtedly, the future of art is digital, so we must work toward “an education that offers multiple career paths in fields as diverse as the visual and graphic arts, the audiovisual industry, the performing arts, creative programming, robotics, and virtual reality.”

In that regard, according to an article published in June on the MIT website, the creation of works using generative AI “is not a harbinger of the demise of art, but rather a new medium with its own distinctive possibilities.”

Barros pointed out, for example, that British artist Peter Gabriel, a musician and pioneer in multimedia arts, uses AI in his recent videos to reflect on technology.

He also emphasized that, from an academic perspective, the professional use of AI involves “encouraging research and the use of the tool from an academic standpoint, as well as leading the debate and the gradual and responsible adoption of this technology.”

The specialized website MEDIUM published an article in 2022 highlighting the potential of AI in the arts: “The ability to create art quickly and in surprising ways, expand artists’ creativity, overcome barriers to the acceptance of digital art, change the way art is valued, and empower artists with more powerful tools.”

However, “designers shouldn’t worry, according to a post on the Toptal website.

Rather than being a threat, AI will present a range of exciting opportunities: designers will co-create with AI as our creativity intersects with art, science, engineering, and design. In the past, technology has made us stronger and faster. AI will make us smarter.

In short, the arrival of AI in the professional world is bringing about profound changes in the way we work and interact. That is why the School of Communication and Design at Universidad ORT Uruguay invites you to join us for “Artificial Spring”: the first exhibition of art and design featuring generative AI, where you can see the work of more than 20 Uruguayan professionals who are already incorporating this technology into their work.

We will also hold an open discussion with professionals and the public to exchange experiences and perspectives on the possibilities and challenges of AI from creative, technical, and ethical perspectives.

This is an opportunity to get a firsthand look at this disruptive technology, which is set to join the tools currently available to creators. The event is part of La Mostra, the annual exhibition of the Bachelor’s Program in Design, Art, and Technology, where visitors can also view student work, participate in workshops, and attend lectures.
