Berrinche: the app developed by ORT students that helps children with ASD

December 19, 2019
Two systems engineering students at ORT, Juan Drets and María Victoria Martínez, created Berrinche, a mobile app designed to promote the inclusion of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) by gathering information from family members or close friends.

Amid tents, tech enthusiasts, and plenty of technology, the idea for Drets y Martínez took shape at Campus Party—which was held in March 2019 in Punta del Este.

Both participated in the Fundación Telefónica–Movistar hackathon, which sought inclusive mobile apps designed to improve the quality of life for people with disabilities. The two Systems Engineering students from Universidad ORT Uruguay “Berrinche” and won first prize: $5,000 to develop this app, which is designed to assist children with ASD and raise awareness about them.

The purpose of the app is to help parents and therapists understand the causes of tantrums—a friendly term students use to refer to disruptive behaviors—based on observations made by people in the children’s environment. The app uses machine learning to identify behavioral patterns that can help therapists develop self-control and prevention strategies.

The app—whose development was supported by ORT’s Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIE)—is available for download on the App Store for iOS devices and on Google Play for Android users. The creators’ idea is that anyone in the circle of a person with ASD can use Berrinche, upload data, and thus play an active role in understanding the causes of disruptive behaviors.
