Biotechnology graduates were awarded four master's scholarships from ANII

February 12, 2024
The Biotechnology Department of the School of Engineering has been awarded four master’s degree scholarships in strategic fields, under the Biotechnology category, funded by the National Agency for Research and Innovation (ANII). The recipients are graduates of the Biotechnology Engineering program, who will carry out their projects primarily in our Biotechnology Laboratory, with internships planned abroad.

All fellowships last for two years and begin in March 2024.

The beneficiaries are:

  • Malena Dalies was selected for her project "Glycosyltransferase for the Biocatalytic Synthesis of Glycosylated Phospholipids," supervised by Dr. Lorena Betancor, a professor of Protein Technology at the school, and co-supervised by Dr. Cecilia Ortiz, an associate professor of Protein Technology. This work is part of a collaborative project between our Biotechnology Laboratory and Dr. Manuela Tosin’s Laboratory at the University of Warwick, United Kingdom, in the field of Biotechnology, where Dalies received funding from the Royal Society to undertake a research internship.
  • Lucía Patrón, M.Eng., received funding for her project "Integration of Cytosine Deaminase into Hybrid Nanomaterials," supervised by Dr. Lorena Betancor and co-supervised by Dr. Cecilia Ortiz, which falls within the field of Nanotechnology and Biomedicine. This work is part of a project in close collaboration with Dr. Valeria Grazú’s laboratory at the Institute of Nanoscience and Nanomaterials of Aragon, Spain, in which Dr. Margot Paulino from the Faculty of Chemistry at the University of the Republic also participates. Patrón received a mobility grant to conduct a research internship at INMA during the second semester.
  • Mathías Costa was selected for his project "Studies of cellular interaction with nanohybrids for targeted enzyme therapy," supervised by Dr. Lorena Betancor of the Nanotechnology Department. This work is part of one of the research lines of the Biotechnology Laboratory in collaboration with Dr. Valeria Grazú’s laboratory at the Institute of Nanoscience and Nanomaterials of Aragon, Spain. The student recently received a mobility grant and is currently conducting a research internship at McGill University in Canada.
  • Tomás Tejera was selected for the program based on his master’s thesis project, “Genetic reprogramming of microorganisms for the biotransformation of soy isoflavones,” supervised by Dr. Cecilia Ortiz and co-supervised by Dr. Bruno Manta of the Microbial Genomics Laboratory at the Institut Pasteur in Montevideo. This project falls within the field of biotechnology, and the student is expected to complete a research internship at the Department of Systems Biology at the National Center for Biotechnology (CNB) in Spain during the second semester of this year.
