Biotechnology in the Time of COVID-19

December 21, 2020
As part of the course "Ethical and Social Aspects of Biotechnology," second-semester students explored the contributions of biotechnology during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The course, taught by Inés Tiscornia, M.A., and Ana Paula Mulet, Ph.D., aims to promote science; as they do every year, the instructors selected a current and relevant topic for the students to research.

“This year, we’ve all listened to scientists explain phenomena related to the virus, vaccines, and diagnostic tests with a genuine desire to keep the public informed. It was a milestone in recognizing the importance of science to society, and I hope it continues this way,” says Tiscornia.

These were some of the topics the students addressed, which can be seen in the posters below:

  • COVID-19 vaccine
  • PCR testing for SARS-CoV-2
  • rapid tests for detecting SARS-CoV-2
  • Transmission of SARS-CoV-2 via surfaces
  • Airborne transmission and person-to-person contact of SARS-CoV-2
  • the link between air conditioner use and the spread of COVID-19
  • COVID-19 in Children
  • non-peer-reviewed scientific publications in the context of the pandemic
  • partnerships and synergies in the context of the pandemic
  • the use of animals in COVID-19 research

“In the early stages of their studies, this project—in which research students explore a specific topic while integrating different concepts and disciplines, such as communication and design—presents a major challenge for them,” the professor concludes.
