Charlotte de Grünberg: A Legacy of Education and Personal Growth

Her life, marked by personal growth and a tireless dedication to education, leaves an indelible legacy on the educational community and Uruguayan society.

*1932–2024*

Charlotte de Grünberg, whose life began in Belgium and was marked by the hardships of the Holocaust, found in Uruguay not only a refuge but also fertile ground in which to cultivate her passion for education.

Since her arrival in 1952, Charlotte has devoted herself tirelessly to teaching, becoming a symbol of perseverance and dedication.

Innovation and Leadership at ORT Uruguay

As executive director of ORT Uruguay since 1977, Charlotte spearheaded an unprecedented educational transformation.

Under his leadership, the then-ORT Institute of Technology expanded to offer a cutting-edge education focused on technology and innovation, preparing generations of students for the challenges of the future.

Charlotte’s strategic vision served as a guiding light for ORT, leading a concerted effort and a journey marked by dedication that culminated in the institution’s recognition as Uruguay’s first private university in 1996, setting new standards of academic excellence.

Their commitment and dedication to achieving excellence in education strengthened the bond between Universidad ORT Uruguay World ORT, attracting the attention and support of the international educational community, including a memorable visit in 2018 by a World ORT delegation, which highlighted the importance of our institution on the global stage.

Commitment to remembrance

Charlotte de Grünberg was noted not only for her leadership in education but also for her tireless efforts to keep the memory of the Shoah alive. Through her personal testimony and her support for educational initiatives, she promoted the importance of remembering and teaching about the atrocities of the Holocaust, fostering a culture of tolerance and respect among younger generations.

Her life during this dark period of history was immortalized in the book *The Girl Who Watched the Trains Leave*, written by Ruperto Long. This work not only recounts the experiences of a young Charlotte facing adversity, but has also become an essential educational tool for understanding the Holocaust, highlighting the strength of the human spirit in the face of cruelty.

Recognition for a Lifetime of Contributions

The significance of his work was recognized both nationally and internationally, and he received numerous awards. Among them were the Scopus Prize from The Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the Robert Singer Award from World ORT, which highlight his exceptional contribution to education and his efforts to promote universal values of humanity and knowledge.

An enduring legacy

Today, Universidad ORT Uruguay the educational community as a whole bid farewell to one of its most iconic figures.

Charlotte de Grünberg leaves behind a legacy of passion for education, a commitment to justice and historical memory, and an exemplary life of service to the community.

Her influence will live on in the institution’s classrooms and in each of the students, teachers, and professionals who had the privilege of working with her.

Promoting Entrepreneurship and Innovation

Under the leadership of Charlotte de Grünberg, Universidad ORT Uruguay not only for its academic excellence but also for fostering an entrepreneurial spirit among students and the entire university community.

Convinced that education must go hand in hand with innovation and economic development, Charlotte was a pioneer in creating programs and spaces dedicated to entrepreneurship. 

Initiatives such as ORT’s Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIE) reflect its vision of an education that prepares young people not only to face the challenges of the future, but also to take the lead in creating new business opportunities and fostering social development.

We join together in mourning the passing of Charlotte de Grünberg, remembering her not only for her achievements but also for her warmth, her strength, her tireless optimism, and her constant pursuit of excellence. 

His legacy will continue to guide the path of Universidad ORT Uruguay, inspiring future generations to pursue their dreams with determination and to help build a better world.
