How and when did your interest in fashion begin?
My interest in fashion started when I was a little girl. I wasn’t quite sure what it entailed, but I knew I wanted to study fashion design. I’d make dresses out of whatever fabric I could get my hands on and would make anything… I have one made from green woolen cloth and lace—it’s all poorly finished—but I wore it anyway.
And when did you decide to study fashion design and make it your career?
When it came time to choose a high school track, I gave it serious thought and decided to pursue the arts track so I could continue down this path and make it my career.
Is there already a particular area of fashion that interests you more than others?
I'm interested in designing clothing, but I also enjoy designing shoes.
What was Lúmina's slogan?
The brief was a winter collection of 10 outfits for men or women.
According to the guidelines, the mini-collection to be presented was to encapsulate “the personal and aspirational vision of Uruguayan women or men.” Particular emphasis was placed on “the pursuit of innovation and experimentation, combined with practicality, resulting in a collection that could be marketed at a later stage.” The collection was to be designed for the 2016 fall-winter season and use fabrics and finishes appropriate for the season. The importance of “the participant complementing the collection with accessories and footwear” was emphasized.

How did your collection turn out?
In the process, I began to think of the classic white shirt as a person, a friend—someone who’s always there for you, no matter the occasion or the moment. The shirt is like a blank canvas that gives you the freedom to do and wear whatever you want, and it will always be there for you.
The collection is called BFF: Best Friends Forever. It features 10 outfits in which the white shirt plays a prominent role, whether in the garments’ cut, the fabrics, the color, or the trims. They are accompanied by garments that convey, through textures and embroidery, what friendship means to me: the friendship that brings us fulfillment and sparks happiness, selflessness, acting for the good of others without expecting anything in return, the assurance of always having someone to count on—a bond that goes beyond the superficial; visual and tactile sensations that reflect my concept of friendship.
The color palette features white, black, and a range of pastel shades. The silhouettes of the garments are created by combining the basic shirt’s cut pieces in different ways. BFF blends the classic style of the white shirt with an urban aesthetic through its colors and textures.
What happens next leading up to the fashion show?
There are three drop-off locations, and we need to stick to the times suggested by Punta Carretas Shopping so we can arrive at the fashion show with plenty of time to spare and enjoy it without getting stressed out.
Now I just need to buy the fabric and start making patterns so I can send them off to be made into clothes.
What are your expectations?
I believe that Lúmina is giving me a very important and unique opportunity to showcase my work as a designer, and I’m going to make the most of it.
I am very grateful to my classmates, as well as to the professors and the university coordinator, who have been incredibly supportive, offering me advice and encouragement ever since I found out I was a finalist.
I hope to represent the faculty well and put into practice everything I’ve learned over the past three years, and above all, to enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime experience.
