Learning communities: a field in the making

February 13, 2019
“Collaboration needs to be promoted in a formal and structured manner,” said Dr. Denise Vaillant, academic secretary of the Institute of Education at Universidad ORT Uruguay.

In the article“School Leaders and Teacher Learning Communities: A Field Under Construction,he analyzed and reflected on the benefits of professional learning communities.

As he explained in his paper, this is a “structured professional development model” in which teachers work collaboratively to improve their students’ learning.

For Vaillant, the added value of a professional learning community lies in the fact that it is an idea that “forces us to rethink the traditional format of the school”: “It is a concept that leads us to question the what (objectives and content), the how (teaching methods), the who (educators), the where (educational settings), and above all, the why (the purposes of education).”

However, he emphasized that they do not arise “spontaneously,” but rather require resources, time, evaluation, follow-up, motivation, and leadership.

“School Leaders and Teacher Learning Communities: A Field Under Construction” is available in Volume 13, Issue 1 of the Revista Eletrônica de Educação (January–April 2019).
