October 5, 2012
On October 3, the lecture “The University and the World of Work: An Inseparable Relationship” was held in the Seminar Room of the School of Engineering.

This event was organized by the Graduate Affairs Office and the Department of Professional Communication at the school, following contacts made between instructors of this course and representatives from various companies at the recent ICT Job Fair, organized by the Graduate Affairs Office on September 12, 2012.

This event was part of a “special class” in the Professional Communication course for second-semester students in the Systems Engineering program.

Neker de la Llana, Manpower’s Professional Services Manager, presented the IT profiles most sought after by companies worldwide and shared key statistics illustrating the current state of zero unemployment in the global technology sector. Salary ranges for highly specialized roles, as well as the most in-demand certifications and technologies, were the topics of greatest interest.

Liliana Olivera, a senior consultant at the Institute for Labor Studies (IUDEL), shared her perspective as an HR professional and debunked the notion that job interviews are unpleasant and difficult to handle.

Carla Salvadori, Head of Work & Education at Gallito.com, spoke about the new IT roles emerging today, such as the Community Manager, which requires IT professionals to have knowledge of other fields such as business, communication, and marketing.

In closing, Ana Laura Trias, the school’s Graduate Coordinator, introduced the Graduate Coordination Office to the students as a department that connects students, alumni, and the job market to support students’ entry into the workforce and generate new innovation projects.

The event was moderated by Graciela Balparda, M.A., a faculty member and instructor in the Department of Educational Technology at the Council for Primary Education, and concluded with questions from students to the panel of speakers, as well as comments on the job market and the challenges faced by those just beginning their job search.
